NEWARK, DE-- In a game that saw the score tied six times and had four lead changes, Drexel University edged the University of Delaware, 10-9, in Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
Delaware (3-9, 0-5 CAA), which has had seven games decided by two goals or less this season, was led by senior Megan Hager (at right) who scored four goals and sophomore Casey McCrudden who tallied a hat trick. Senior Laura Libertini and freshman Lindyn Soviero each posted a goal for the Blue Hens while freshman Alexis Curcio added an assist.
Drexel (9-3, 1-3 CAA), which has defeated Delaware just three times in 22 meetings, was led by Emily Hoesch who tallied five goals, including the game-winner. The Dragons had two goals from Kaitlin Keegan and one goal apiece from Kerry Kelly, Colleen Rocks, and Sarah Carter.
McCrudden scored 1:37 into the contest to give the Hens the early lead before Drexel answered three times to take a 3-1 lead at the 16:58 mark. Lindyn Soviero and Megan Hager added unassisted goals to even the score 3-3 going into halftime.
Drexel scored 1:17 into the the second half to take the 4-3 lead before Delaware’s Libertini, McCrudden, and Hager tallied goals to take a 6-4 lead with 25:34 left to play. Drexel scored four unanswered goals to go back on top, 8-6, with 13:30 remaining. McCrudden added a goal at 10:02 to cut the lead to one before Hager scored at 6:36 to tie the game, 8-8. Drexel’s Sarah Carter scored her first goal of the season 12 seconds later to put the Dragons on top, 9-8. Hager notched her fourth of the contest with 4:53 left to even the score, 9-9. Hoesch scored the game-winner with 2:02 remaining in the contest on a free position shot.
Delaware’s Jessica Cerveny and Drexel’s Lauren LaBella each posted 15 saves in the net.
The Blue Hens held a 40-34 advantage in shots, while Drexel posted 25 groudballs to Delaware’s 23.
Delaware returns to action on Wednesday when the Blue Hens host Penn State University for a 7 p.m. game. Boxscore
