McGrath Scores Six Goals to Lead Hofstra Over Delaware Women’s Lacrosse, 16-13, in Overtime

HEMPSTEAD, NY-- Casey McGrath scored six goals to lead Hofstra University to a 16-13 overtime win over the University of Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Delaware (3-8, 0-4 CAA), which was playing in its third overtime game of the season, was led by freshman Lindyn Soviero who posted a hat trick and added two assists on the day. Junior Katie Muth (at right) tallied a hat trick, while freshman Debbie Sloan added two goals and one assist. Sophomore Casey McCrudden notched two goals and senior Megan Hager scored one goal and added two assists while freshmen Alexis Curcio and Cara Cerone each posted a goal.

Hofstra (4-6, 1-2 CAA), which has defeated Delaware four straight times dating back to the 2004 season, was also led by Kim Hillier who posted four goals and one assist and Heather Albro who tallied four goals. Lauren Whitcomb added one goal and one assist, while Jamie Rabuano added one goal.

McCrudden opened the scoring 1:54 into the game on an unassisted goal before Albro answered to tie the game 1:08 later. Delaware’s Soviero and Hager scored 51 seconds apart to give the Blue Hens a 3-1 advantage at the 23:40 mark. Hofstra scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead until Muth ended the run off of an assist from Hager with 12:14 remaining in the first half to make it 5-4 in favor of Hofstra.

Albro scored at the 8:56 mark before McCrudden cut the lead to 6-5 with 5:02 left in the first half. The Pride scored twice to take an 8-5 lead until Soviero added a goal just before halftime to make it 8-6.

Hofstra scored three times to open the second half before Sloan scored at the 26:11 mark on a free position shot. Muth added another goal 20 seconds later to cut the lead to 11-8. Hillier added a goal with 24:38 remaining to make it a 12-8 game before Soverio, Muth and Sloan cut the lead to 12-11 with 7:01 left in regulation. Albro added a goal to give Hofstra a 13-11 lead before Curcio scored with 4:45 remaining to cut the lead to one.

Playing in just her third game this season, Cerone scored the first goal of her collegiate career at the 1:43 mark in the second half to send the game into overtime.

Hofstra’s McGrath scored two goals and Albro added one in the two overtime periods.

Jessica Cerveny made 12 saves in the net for the Blue Hens, who have had seven games decided by two goals or less, while Hofstra’s Maisie Osteen also made 12 saves.

The Pride held a 40-30 advantage in shots and a 20-17 advantage in groundballs.

Delaware returns to action on Sunday when the Blue Hens host CAA rival Drexel University for a 1 p.m. game.
