  Delaware Women’s Lacrosse Drops Home Finale to No. 8 Johns Hopkins

NEWARK, DE-- All-American Mary Key fired in two goals and posted a game-high five assists to lead No. 8 Johns Hopkins to a 17-6 win over the University of Delaware in non-league women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware (5-11), which played its final home game of the season tonight and honored the teams five seniors (at right), was led by sophomore Casey McCrudden who notched a hat trick and added an assist on the night. Freshmen Debbie Sloan, Lindyn Soviero, and Lauren Cannon each tallied a goal, while senior Megan Hager and freshman Erin Zimmerman each notched an assist.

Johns Hopkins (10-1), which has split one game apiece with Delaware all-time, was led by Sarah Welsh who scored four goals, while Meagan Voight, Kadie Stamper, and Annie Wagner each tallied a hat trick. Lauren Schwarzmann added a goal and three assists, while Steph Janice posted a goal.

The Blue Jays poured in six goals in the first 13:47 of the contest to take an early 6-0 lead before McCrudden ended the drought on a pass from Hager at 14:34. Johns Hopkins tallied two more scores before McCrudden answered again to cut the lead to 8-2 at the 7:53 mark. The Blue Jays scored two more times to take a 10-2 lead with 4:56 remaining in first half. Soviero took a pass from McCrudden at 3:09 to make it 10-3 before Johns Hopkins’ Walsh posted a goal at 2:41 to put the Blue Jays up 11-3. Cannon scored her first collegiate goal with 1:10 remaining in the first half to send the Blue Hens into halftime down 11-4.

Johns Hopkins scored five unanswered goals to give the Blue Jays a 16-4 lead at the 10:50 mark before Sloan took a pass from Zimmerman at 6:51 to cut the lead to 16-5. McCrudden scored on a free position shot at 5:34 to make it 16-6, but Stamper scored at 4:55 to end the scoring.

Delaware’s Suzy Herlihy posted three saves in the net, while Johns Hopkins’ Lauren Riddick made 11 stops and Amelia Harris made four.

Delaware outshot the Blue Jays, 33-25, and held a 24-23 advantage in groundballs. Johns Hopkins held a 15-10 advantage in draw controls.

Seniors Hager, Laura Libertini, Lauren Carrigan, Kristin Cellucci, and Diana Hall were honored in pre-game ceremonies.

Delaware returns to action on Tuesday when the Blue Hens travel to Princeton University for their last game of the 2006 season for a 4:30 p.m. game.
