Old Dominion Hands Delaware Women’s Lacrosse Fourth Straight Loss

NORFOLK, VA -- In a Colonial Athletic Association battle, the Old Dominion University Monarchs handed the University of Delaware a 10-8 loss in women’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Foreman Field.

Delaware (3-7, 0-3 CAA), which defeated Old Dominion 15-3 in 2005, was led by senior Laura Libertini (right)who had three goals. Sophomore Casey McCrudden added two goals while classmate Jenny Diana, senior Megan Hager, and freshman Alexis Curcio each tallied one goal.

Old Dominion (5-3, 2-0 CAA), which holds a 9-6 all-time advantage over the Blue Hens, was led by Kelly Kimener who had three goals and two assists in the victory. Tameka Davis and Caroline Jacobs each notched a hat trick on the afternoon, while Melody Shotwell added one goal and one assist.

McCrudden scored Delaware’s lone goal in the first half on a free position shot at the 23:27 mark to give the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead. Old Dominion rallied with five unanswered goals to put the Monarchs up, 5-1, with 7:40 left in the first half.

Diana opened the scoring in the second half with an unassisted goal 8:18 into the second half before Shotwell scored 57 seconds later to make it, 6-2. Curcio scored 12 seconds later to bring the Hens within three, until Kimener answered to put the Monarchs up, 7-3. Libertini scored at the 11:25 mark before Old Dominion answered twice to take a 9-4 lead. Hager scored on a free position shot with 13:52 remaining in the contest before Old Dominion answered once more to take a 10-5 lead with 10:49 remaining. Delaware’s McCrudden and Libertini combined to score the final three goals.

Jessica Cerveny made 13 saves in the net for the Blue Hens while Old Dominion’s Michelle Gannon also made 13 saves.

The Blue Hens outshot the Monarchs, 26-25, and also held a 35-28 advantage in groundballs.

Delaware returns to action on Friday when the Blue Hens travel to Hempstead, NY to take on CAA rival Hofstra University for a 4 p.m. game.
