  McCrudden Scores Five Goals to Help Delaware Women’s Lacrosse Upset No. 18 Penn State

NEWARK, DE-- Sophomore Casey McCrudden (at right) fired in five goals, including the game-winner with 16 seconds remaining, to lead the University of Delaware to a 15-14 upset of No. 18 Penn State University in non-league women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware (4-9), which has beaten two nationally ranked teams this season, received a career-high four goals from freshman Lindyn Soviero and three goals from senior Megan Hager. Freshman Debbie Sloan added one goal and two assists, while senior Kristin Cellucci and junior Katie Muth each tallied one goal and freshman Erin Zimmerman added an assist.

Penn State (5-7), which has defeated Delaware 21 times in 27 meetings, was led by Lori Havrilla, who posted four goals and one assist, and Jessi Leib who scored four goals. Shari Maslin added three goals while Lindsay Dutch notched two goals and one assist. Meg Boyd tallied one goal and Megan McGuire added two assists.

Soviero opened the scoring off a pass from Sloan 55 seconds into the contest, while McCrudden added a goal 48 seconds later to put the Hens up 2-0. Cellucci tallied the third goal for Delaware 2:58 into the contest to take a 3-0 lead. Penn State rallied with five unanswered goals to make it 5-3 in favor of the Nittany Lions.

Hager began another Delaware rally at the 17:54 mark before Soviero notched two goals followed by McCrudden, Muth, and Hager each adding a goal to take a 9-5 lead at 10:24. The Nittany Lions rallied for five more goals before the end of the first half to take a 10-9 lead at halftime.

McCrudden and Hager opened the second half with unassisted goals to make it 11-10 in favor of Delaware at the 21:53 mark. Penn State tallied two goals before McCrudden and Sloan answered back to take a 13-12 lead.

Lieb notched back-to-back goals to give the Nittany Lions a 14-13 lead with 6:40 to play before Soviero posted her fourth goal of the game at the 2:47 mark to tie the contest 14-14.

Penn State called a timeout and then Delaware’s Muth won the draw control before McCrudden scored the game-winner with 16 seconds on the clock.

Delaware’s Jessica Cerveny posted seven saves in the net, while Cammie Jurkowsky and Jess Boccio combined to make four saves for Penn State.

Delaware and Penn State each posted 28 shots on the night and each tallied 16 groundballs.

Delaware, which ended a six-game losing streak, returns to action on Friday when the Blue Hens host George Mason University for a 7 p.m. game.
