NEWARK, DE -- The close calls continued for the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse squad Tuesday night at the Blue Hens tied the game midway through the second half but UMBC scored the game’s final three goals, including two by Kara Dorr, to post a 12-9 non-league victory at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware, which was coming off a tough 9-8 home loss to Rutgers Saturday afternoon in which the Hens held a second half lead but were held scoreless over the final 18 minutes, fell to 1-2 on the season.

Katie Muth (Seton Keough/Ellicott City, MD - at right) led the Blue Hens with four goals while Jenny Diana (Robinson/Burke, VA) scored three times, Debbie Sloan added two goals, and Casey McCrudden and Laura Miller each distributed two assists. UD fell despite outshooting the Retrievers 35-26.

UMBC (3-2), which won its second straight game, got a big effort in goal from Susie Sweeney, who recorded 16 saves, including a 10 in the second half. Dorr led the offense with four goals while Kelly Fiorani had three goals and two assists, Ali Levendusky and Jen Kasper each scored twice, and Meghan Keelan scored a goal and dished out two assists.

The Blue Hens, who will now take a week off before returning to action March 15 vs. Pennsylvania, had won all four previous games between the two teams but the two schools were meeting for the first time since 1994.

After UMBC scored the game’s first goal two minutes into the contest on a tally by Fiorani, Delaware took control by scoring four straight goals, including two by Muth, to go up 4-1. After Kasper scored her first goal for UMBC to cut the margin to 4-2, the Hens reeled off two more goals, including tallies from Muth and Sloan, to take a 6-2 lead.

But UMBC closed out the half on a 4-0 run as Dorr scored twice, including a goal off a feed from Fiorani with 2:58 left to knot the score at 6-6 heading into halftime.

The Retrievers scored three of the first four goals of the second half - completing a 7-1 run - to take a 9-7 lead with 17:05 as Fiorani scored twice in a span of five minutes. Delaware put together a rally of its own, getting goals from Diana with 15:39 remaining and from Muth with 9:28 left to tie the score at 9-9.

But the rest of the contest belonged to UMBC. Dorr gave the Retrievers the lead for good at 10-9 on a goal with 7:43 remaining and added some insurance just over two minutes later with her fourth goal of the game. Levendusky’s free position score with 1:40 to go iced it for the visitors.
