PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Debbie Sloan (at right) posted two goals but the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team fell to nationally ranked Pennsylvania, 13-6, Wednesday evening at Franklin Field.
The Blue Hens (1-3), which were coming off their first victory of the season Friday, got two goals from sophomore Debbie Sloan and one goal each from Nicole Flego, Emily Schaknowski, Amanda Alrich, and Courtney Aburn.
Penn (4-1), which was ranked No. 17 in the latest IWLCA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Rankings, scored 12 of the games first 13 goals. Chrissy Muller got the Quakers on the board at the 4:49 mark and was followed 10 seconds later by a Rachel Manson goal to put Penn up 2-0.
Debbie Sloan recorded Delaware’s first goal at the 6:52 mark to pull the Hens to within one but Penn would score the next five goals to go into halftime up 7-1.
Penn then scored the first five goals of the second half to give the Quakers a 12-1 lead at the 43:53 mark. Muller and Becca Edwards combined for six goals and an assist to lead the Quakers.
Delaware would end the game by scoring the games final four goals to close the final margin to 13-6. Auburn and Alrich tallied unassisted goals, while Schaknowski and Sloan added goals on free position shots.
Delaware goalkeeper Jessica Cerveny posted nine saves, while Sarah Waxman tallied six saves for Penn.
The Blue Hens next game will be their home opener next Wednesday against St. Bonaventure at 4 p.m. Boxscore
