NEWARK, DE -- Junior Casey McCrudden (at right) tallied a career-high six goals to lead the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team to a 15-8 victory over St. Bonaventure Wednesday afternoon in the Blue Hens’ home opener at Rullo Stadium.
McCrudden’s six goals were the most scored by a single player since Corinne Shuck had six against Ohio State in 2002. She also broke her previous career-high of five goals, which she has now done four times, and the junior recorded her 13th career hatrick.
Delaware (2-3), which has won two of its last three games, got two goals each from sophomore Debbie Sloan, freshman Emily Schaknowski, senior Katie Muth and freshman Nicole Flego. Freshman Amanda Jones also recorded a goal for the Hens and Schaknowski led the team with two assists.
St. Bonaventure (1-3) was led by Katelyn Faas who posted two goals and an assist. Kimberly Ross, Molly Hastrick, and Keri Vito also scored two goals each for the Bonnies.
The Bonnies got on the board first as Vito scored off a Brenna Houghton pass just 1:17 into the game. Delaware responded with the next two goals as Flego and Schaknowski each tallied unassisted goals. Faas would tie the game at 2-2 with a goal at the 26:16 mark before the Blue Hens went on a 6-0 run in which McCrudden would score three of her six goals to give the Hens an 8-2 lead. The Bonnies would rally back to score three of the next four goals, but McCrudden scored with one second remaining in the half to send the Hens into the break with a 10-5 lead.
Katie Muth recorded Delaware’s first goal out of the break off a Schaknowski assist but the Bonnies responded with a free position goal from Hastrich. Delaware would then score four of the games final six goals to seal up the victory.
Delaware goalkeeper Jessica Cerveny posted four saves in one of her best outing of the season, while Eboni Preston and Tori Waheibi combined for nine saves for the Bonnies.
The Blue Hens next game will be Friday at 3 p.m. against Davidson at Rullo Stadium.
