COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Eric Sands won the
discus to lead the University of Delaware men to a second
place finish and Kristen Robbins captured the 1,500
meters to lead the UD women to a fourth place standing
Saturday at the University of Maryland Outdoor Track and
Field Invitational.
Host Maryland won the women's team title with 203 points
followed by East Carolina, Rhode Island, Delaware,
Northeastern, and George Mason in the six- team field. In
the men's meet, Rhode Island captured first place with 192.5
points, edging runner-up Delaware at 124.5. Maryland was
third followed by Northeastern, East Carolina, and George
Mason.
Robbins was the lone Blue Hen winner on the women's side,
finishing 1,500 meters in 4:43.24. Also for the Hens,
Brandy Connell was second in the hammer with a school
record throw of 175-3 3/4 (53.48m) and Ashley Forlini
was second in the pole vault (9-0) and third in the javelin
(31.90m). Carol Oliveri placed third in the pole
vault (8-6) and Caron Marra was third in the 3,000
meters (10:20.79).
On the men's side, Sands was the lone Blue Hen winner,
throwing the discus 45.42 meters to win the title. Placing
second for the Hens was the 4 x 100 meter relay team
(43.83), Tom Marando in the shot put (14.45m),
Mike Chadwick in the hammer (52.36m), and Mike
Hendrickson in the pole vault (13-6).
Final Women's Team Standings: 1. Maryland - 203;
2. East Carolina - 113; 3. Rhode Island - 110; 4. Delaware -
77; Northeastern - 61; 6. George Mason - 11.
