NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware athletes captured six first place finishes, including four in the throwing events, to highlight action at the Delaware Invitational Saturday afternoon at soggy Delaware Mini-Stadium.
A heavy rain fell throughout the meet and several teams dropped out, limiting the amount of participants and cancelling the pole vault and high jump competitions. No team scores were kept.
On the men’s side, Delaware won five first place finishes, Morgan State won five races, LaSalle captured three, American had two, and Temple one. On the women’s side, Navy posted six wins, Morgan State had five, Towson and LaSalle both won two, and American and Delaware each won one competition.
For the Delaware men, Kyle Casella (Bishop Eustace/Lindenwold, NJ) won the hammer (169-10) and was third in the shot put (41-10), Doug Alpers (Sparta/Sparta, NJ) won the discus (119-9) and was second in the shot put (43 1/2), Jared Wasser (Wootton/North Potomac, MD) won the shot put (45 1/2) and was second in the hammer (132-0), Brad Dodson (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV) won the 3,000 meters (8:46.53), and Will Jurkowski (North Salem/North Salem, NY) won the 800 meters (1:57.06).
Also for the Hens, Tony DiUlio was second in the discus (113-3 1/2) and Kyle Schmid was second in the 3,000 meters (9:00.45).
For the Delaware women, freshman Nicole Amorosino (Kittatinny Regional/Newton, NJ) was the lone individual winner, capturing the discus throw with a toss of 110-11 1/2.
Delaware posted 11 top five finishes as Rachel Young (Sparta/Sparta, NJ - at right) was second in the shot put (38-7) and third in the hammer throw (138-10), Annie Kowtoniuk (Westmont Hilltop/Johnstown, PA) was second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (12:31.26), and Julianne Twomey was third in the steeplechase (13:56.35).
Also, Jennifer Kramer was fourth in the discus (103-8 1/2), Amanda Marshall was fourth in the shot put (37-2 1/4), Stephanie Cronk was fourth in the hammer (132-10 1/2) and fifth in the discus (99-1), Pooja Aysola was fourth in the steeplechase (14:10.17), Julia Somers was fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:57.38), and Lauren Stephenson was fourth in the 3,000 meters (11:16.99).
Both Delaware teams will compete at the Rider Invitational next Saturday.
