PRINCETON, NJ -- University of Delaware freshman Cristine Marquez (at right) placed fifth in the trials of the 400 meter run to highlight Blue Hen performances on the second day of the ECAC/IC4A Championships Saturday at Princeton University’s Weaver Track and Field Stadium.
A total of 10 Blue Hen athletes competed during the first two days of the three-day meet. The third and final day of action will get underway Sunday morning. Competing for Delaware Sunday will be Marquez in the women’s 400 meter finals, Jared Wasser in the men’s shot put, and Rachel Young in the women’s shot put. Wasser was seventh in his event a year ago while Young was 16th.
The Princeton women lead the ECAC team standings after two days while Liberty leads the IC4A men’s standings after two days of competition.
Marquez, who holds the UD record in the 400 meters with a time of 55.34, nearly matched that Saturday with a time of 55.71 to place fifth in the preliminaries and advance to Sunday’s finals at 1 p.m. Tiera Fletcher of Villanova won the trials with a time of 54.73.
No Delaware men competed on Saturday but freshman Chase Renoll placed 18th in the discus Friday night with a toss of 143-8 while senior Kyle Schmid finished 31st in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:42.76. Virginia’s Yemi Ayeni won the discus with a toss of 194-2 while Liberty’s Josh McDougal captured the 5,000 race with a clocking of 14:00.49.
Also for the Delaware women on Saturday, the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Daniella Price, Liz Harvin, Marquez, and Asha Quant placed 12th with a school record time of 3:49.29 but did not advance to Sunday’s finals; Quant placed 13th in the long jump with a leap of 18-7; Kelli McDonald placed 14th in the pole vault despite not reaching the minimum height of 11-5 3/4 on three attempts; Amanda Marshall was 17th in the discus with a toss of 135-4; the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Price, Harvin, Quant, and Brittany Wright was 18th in a time of 47.66 but did not advance to Sunday’s finals; and Rachel Young placed 35th in the discus with no distance as she fouled on all three attempts.
Delaware’s 4 x 400 meter relay team broke the previous Blue Hen record of 3:49.66 set by Kellyn Wright, Harvin, Marquez, and Quant earlier this season.
Pittsburgh won the 4 x 100 trials with a time of 45.32; Navy’s Jacqui Charnigo won the pole vault (12-9 1/2); Monmouth’s Tisifenee Taylor captured the long jump (21-6); Erica Davis of Yale won the discus (171-6), and Seton Hall captured first place in the 4 x 400 meter trials (3:39.92).
