ROCK HILL, SC -- Sophomore Cristine Marquez (at right) captured the 400 meters with a school record time at the Winthrop Invitational and the Blue Hen men posted six top five finishes in events at North Carolina State and Maryland to highlight University of Delaware track and field performances Saturday at three different meets.
Both the Delaware men’s and women’s teams competed at three meets during the weekend, at the Asics Invitational at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, at the Adidas/Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State, and at the Maryland Terrapin Invitational at the University of Maryland.
Marquez was the Hens’ lone champion as she won the 400 meters at Winthrop, breaking her own school record with a time of 55.15. Her old mark was 55.34 set last season. The time was good enough to qualify for the ECAC Championships in May at Princeton.
Also for the UD women at Winthrop, Christine Sloat was second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:36.69), Laura Chirico was second in the pole vault (11-7 3/4), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Kayla Hennessy, Kristi Cox, Marquez, and Asha Quant was third (3:54.77), Christina Antonopoulos was third in the 1,500 meters (4:50.26), Annie Kowtoniuk was third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (12:04.60), Amanda Marshall was third in the hammer (155-1) and the discus (134-10), and Kelli McDonald was third in the pole vault (11-7 3/4).
At North Carolina State, Brad Dodson was fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:29.67) and the 4 x 200 meter relay team was ninth (1:31.22).
At Maryland, Delaware athletes collected 16 top 10 finishes on the day, including 14 by the Blue Hen men. John Viotto was third in the shot put (48-11) and sixth in the discus (135-11), Dave Gyurina was third in the javelin (171-1), Doug Alpers was fourth in the discus (137-2), Dave Schwartz was fifth in the hammer (158-4), Seth Rohrbaugh was fifth in the discus (135-11), the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Mike Goldwasser, Kyle Hackett, Kevin McCove, and Kyle Navy was sixth (45.27), Connor Whitesel was sixth in the hammer (157-1), Alex Tingue was seventh in the javelin (149-3), Andrew Lynch was seventh in the shot put (47-7 3/4), John Hally was seventh in the 110 meter hurdles (16.08), Chase Renoll was eighth in the shot put (47-4 1/4), McCove was ninth in the triple jump (39-10 3/4), and Nagy was ninth in the 100 meters (11.35).
For the Delaware women, Kirsten Hunter was third in the javelin (118-6) and Leslie Lynch was eighth in the javelin (122-4).
