SWARTHMORE, PA -- Junior Kelli McDonald (at right) won the women’s pole vault competition with a school record leap and freshman Jeremy Simkins captured the men’s 400 meter hurdles title to lead the University of Delaware men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Last Chance Meet hosted by Swarthmore College Tuesday night.
McDonald was the lone UD women to win an event as she vaulted 12-feet, 6 1/2-inches to capture first place and win her 15th career meet title. Her vault broke the previous Delaware outdoor record of 12-6 set by Casey Bennett during the 2004 season.
Simkins won the 400 meter hurdles with a career-best time of 53.71 to lead the Blue Hen men. The victory marked his seventh meet victory of the season, including six during the outdoor season.
Also for the Delaware men, John Viotto was third in the discus (132-5) and fourth in the shot put (47-10), Ross Shober was third in the long jump (21-4 1/4) and fifth in the 100 meters (11.28), Conrad Rapp was third in the pole vault (15-3), Mike Ward was fourth in the 5,000 meters (15:02.38), Will Jurkowski was sixth in the 800 meters (1:52.48) with the second fastest time in school history, Jake Cohen and George Vallone tied for eighth in the pole vault (13-9 1/4), and Brad Dodson was eighth in the 1,500 meters (3:56.67).
Also for the Delaware women, Alex Francis was second in the 100 meters (12.89) and 200 meters (26.23) and seventh in the javelin (99-0), Leah Putman was third in the long jump (17-4 3/4) and fifth in the triple jump (35-2 1/2), and Kellyn Wright was 11th in the 800 meters (2:16.94).
The Delaware men and women will compete at the IC4A and ECAC Championships this weekend at Princeton University.
