TOWSON, MD -- University of Delaware athletes captured 13 first place finishes, including four by Asha Quant (at right) on the women’s side, as the Blue Hens opened the 2008 outdoor track and field season by competing at the Towson Invitational at Johnny Unitas Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Delaware women captured seven first place finishes as Quant won the long jump (18-1 3/4), 100 meters (12.60), and 200 meters (25.57) and teamed with Cristine Marquez, Kayla Hennessy, and Kristi Cox to win the 400 meter relay (48.20), Isabel Graf won the 5,000 meters (19:11.77), Kelli McDonald captured the pole vault (11-11 3/4), and Amanda Marshall won the shot put (41-5).
Marshall was also second in the hammer (143-9) and discus (121-5), Hennessy was second in the 100 meter hurdles (14.50, UD Freshman Record) and third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.70), Stephanie LaFergola was second in the 5,000 meters (19:20.16), Laura Chirico was second in the pole vault (10-11 3/4), and Kristen Hunter was second in the javelin (121-7).
The Blue Hen men won six events as Will Jurkowski won the 800 meters (1:58.32), Conrad Rapp captured the pole vault (15-4 1/4), Jamie Igo was the winner in the high jump (6 3/4), Doug Alpers won the discus (142-8), John Viotta captured the shot put (49-10), and Kyle Hackett, Nick Morrisey, Kyle Nagy, and M.J. Rawls teamed to win the 400 meter relay (43.56).
Also for the Hens, Nick Pyle was second in the 5,000 meters (15:18.77), Mike Zeberkiewicz was second in the 1,500 meters (4:03.28), Jeremy Simkins was second in the 110 meter hurdles (15.92) and 400 meter hurdles (55.83), Ross Shober was second in the 100 meters (11.36), Chase Renoll was second in the discus (132-0), Nick Alexander was second in the shot put (48-2 3/4), and Dave Gyurina was second in the javelin (172-4).
The meet was a non-scoring event and included Delaware, Towson, Temple, Fordham, Juniata, Gettysburg, Goucher, Loyola, and Johns Hopkins.
