TOWSON, Md. -- Both the University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams are in fourth place in the team standings after the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Friday at Towson University.

The Delaware men advanced six runners to Saturday’s finals and posted 11 top 10 finishes while the Blue Hen women advanced three runners to the finals and had six top 10 finishes to highlight the day. The second and final day will get underway Saturday morning.

William & Mary took the first day lead in the team standings on both the mens’ and women’s side. In the mens standings, the Tribe leads with 84 points followed by defending champion UNC Wilmington, Northeastern, Delaware, VCU, George Mason, and Georgia State in the seven-team field. On the women’s side, the defending champion Tribe posted 68 points to take first place ahead of UNC Wilmington, Northeastern, Delaware, George Mason, VCU, James Madison, Georgia State, and Towson in the nine-team field.

The Hens had two first place finishes and set one school record on the day as Jeremy Simkins had the top time in the men’s 400 meter preliminaries with a time of 53.17 and Cristine Marquez had the top time in the 400 meter preliminaries with a time of 55.65. Delaware senior Kelli McDonald (at right) placed third in the women’s pole vault but broke her own school record with a height of 12-9 1/2.

Delaware freshman Jim Schwendtner was second in the hammer (169-3), freshman Jon Gomez was third in the javelin (188-6), defending champion Connor Whitesel was fourth in the hammer (168-6), Chris Bourke was fourth in the 10,000 meters (30:56.47), Ryan Braunagel was sixth in the hammer (154-8), Shane Ordway was seventh in the pole vault (14-11), Theo Lusardi was eighth in the hammer (145-8), D.J. Lehr was eighth in the pole vault (13-11 1/4), Vinny Fronczkowski was ninth in the 200 meters (22.41), Ross Shober was 10th in the 200 meters (22.42), and John Hally was 10th in the 400 meter hurdles (57.70).

In addition to Simkins, also advancing to Saturday’s finals for the UD men were Nick Morrisey in the 100 meters (fifth at 10.99) and 200 meters (seventh in 22.08), Shober in the 100 meters (sixth at 11.00), Nate Twer in the 800 meters (seventh at 1:53.87), and Corey Wall in the 800 meters (eighth in 1:54.82).

For the Delaware women, freshman Jillian Seamon was second in the javelin (137-4), Amanda Marshall was third in the hammer (160-2), Jennifer Holly was fourth in the pole vault (11-11 3/4), Laura Chirico was fourth in the pole vault (11-11 3/4), Kellyn Wright was ninth in the 800 meters (2:16.86), Kristi Cox was ninth in the 400 meters (56.73), and Christina Antonopoulos was 10th in the 5,000 meters (17:40.60).

Marquez advanced to Saturdays finals in the 400 meters and 200 meters (sixth in 24.51) while Karen Mandrachia advanced to the finals with a 10th place finish in the 1,000 meters (4:43.76).
