Delaware Women Place Sixth at CAA Track Championships; Marquez, Marshall Place Second

TOWSON, Md. -- John Viotto and Chase Renoll posted second place finishes for the University of Delaware men and Cristine Marquez (at right) and Amanda Marshall each collected runner-up showings for the UD women as the Blue Hen outdoor track and field teams closed out competition at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Saturday at Towson University.

The Delaware men posted a fifth place team finish while the UD women were sixth overall. UNC Wilmington won its third straight men’s team title with 184 points followed by William & Mary, Virginia Commonwealth, George Mason, Delaware, Northeastern, and Georgia State in the seven-team field.

The Blue Hen women posted a sixth place team finish, improving one spot from last season. William & Mary won its second straight team title and its eighth in the last nine season with 181 points. UNC Wilmington was second followed by Georgia State, Northeastern, George Mason, Delaware, James Madison, Towson, and Virginia Commonwealth in the nine-team field.

Delaware did not have an individual champion at the two-day meet but had some strong showings on Saturday with the four second place finishes. Viotto was second in the men’s shot put (52-1), Renoll was second in the men’s discus (148-1), Marshall was second in the women’s discus (141-10), and Marquez was second in the women’s 200 meters with a school record time of 24.15.

Marquez was also fourth in the 400 meters (55.31), teamed with Asia Hollis, Alexi Capsouras, and Kristi Cox to finish third in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:48.49), and teamed with Hollis, Cox, and Alexa Windsor to place eighth in the 4 x 100 meter relay (49.34. Also for the Hens, Karen Mandrachia was sixth in the 1,500 meters (4:34.27), Julia Somers was seventh in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:31.44), Briana Gray was 10th in the high jump (5-1), and Marshall was 10th in the shot put (41-8).

For the UD men, Jeremy Simkins placed third in the 110 meter hurdles (15.18), finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (55.43), teamed with Ross Shober, Kyle Nagy, and Nick Morrisey to place third in the 4 x 100 meter relay (42.16), and joined Vinny Fronczkowski, Morrisey, and Justin Molligan to finish fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3;23.38).

Also for the Hens, Viotto was fourth in the discus (144-7), John Hally was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (15.36), Gregg Cantwell was fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:23.47), Morrisey was fifth in the 100 meters (10.97) and eighth in the 200 meters (23.00, Nate Twer was sixth in the 800 meters (1:54.00), and Shober was sixth in the 100 meters (11.07).
