Delaware Outdoor Track Closes Competition at Penn Relays with 23rd Place Finish at 4 x 800m Relay

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field squads closed out competition at the annual Penn Relays Saturday by competing in four events and posting three top 20 finishes.

Delaware’s top performer was freshman Jon Gomez, who placed third overall in the men’s college javelin with a toss of 205-2, just two inches shy of second place and six feet off the winning mark of 211-1 by Rutgers’ Jeremy Pennino.

Also for the Delaware men, Connor Whitesel placed 13th overall in the hammer throw with a toss of 171-6 while freshman Jim Schwendtner was 16th in the same event with a throw of 155-6.

The Blue Hens also competed in two relay events as the men’s 4 x 800 meter team placed second in its heat and 16th overall with a time of 7:39.25 while the women’s 4 x 800 meter relay team placed second in its heat and 23rd overall with a clocking of 9:17.7.

The men’s team was made up of Corey Wall, Nate Twer, Mike Tait, and James Townsend while the women’s team consisted of Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos, Kellyn Wright (at right), and Karen Mandrachia.
