Blue Hen Women Dominate with Seven First Place Finishes

 

TOWSON, MD - The University of Delaware men's and women's outdoor track and field teams dominated the action at the Towson University Invitational Saturday at Minnegan Stadium.

The Blue Hen women won seven events and the Delaware men captured five first place finishes to lead the way. Also participating in the non-scoring event were Hagerstown Junior College, Towson, Essex Community College, Howard Community College, Temple, America, George Washington, Loyola, Montgomery Community College, and Navy.

Taking first place finishes for the UD women were junior Sarah Johnson (RHAM Regional/Hebron, CT) in the 3,000 meters (10:36.6), freshman Tyechia Smith (McNair/Jersey City, NJ) in the 400m hurdles (1:07.46), freshman Jessica Urbonas (Rockville/Vernon, CT) in the javelin (124-0), junior Jennie Chiller (Sharon/Sharon, MA) in the hammer (134-1 1/2), senior Carol Oliveri (St. Rose/Brick, NJ) in the pole vault (11-0), senior Dana Kolesar (Upper Merion/King of Prussia, PA) in the 10,000 meters (41:24.26), and freshman Alison Taylor (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) in the 1,500 meters (5:09.20). Oliveri broke her own school record of 10-10 in the pole vault.

Top multiple place winners for the UD women were Smith who also was third in the 400 meter hurdles (15.50); Kerry Van Riper (Bethlehem Central/Delmar, NY) was second in the hammer (132-3) and third in the shot put (35-5 1/2); Gena Carapezza (Notre Dame/Ewing, NJ) was second in the discus (111-11) and fourth in the javelin (100-6); Urbonas was fourth in the discus (105-3 1/2) and fifth in the shot put (34-0); Lisa Salvatore (Mercy/Baltimore, MD) was second in the 1,500 meters (5:11.37) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:18.17); Katie Sheaffer (Williamsport/Williamsport, PA) was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.20) and fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:12.10); Jen Lublanecki (West Morris Central/Long Valley, NJ) was fourth in the 100 meters (12.52) and fifth in the 200 meters (25.67); and Stephanie Kuehne (Dulaney/Phoenix, MD) was fourth in the high jump (5-0) and fifth in the triple jump (32-10 1/2).

Winning events for the Delaware men were Andy Palm in the javelin (182-10), sophomore Pat Riley (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) in the 5,000 meters (15:00.52), freshman Brandon Nesbitt (Ewing/Trenton, NJ) in the 400m hurdles (55.07), sophomore Ben Thuma (Northern York/Harrisburg, PA) in the discus (146-1 1/2), and sophomore Jon DiNozzi (Fox Lane, NY/Middletown, NY) in the pole vault (15-6). DiNozzi's height was just one inch off the school record set in 1992.

Top multiple place winners for the UD men were Mike Goodhart (Warwick/Lititz, PA) who placed second in both the hammer (164-8) and discus (145-2); Thuma also placed fourth in the hammer (137-7) and fifth in the shot put (39-1 1/2); Greg Barker (West/Cherry Hill, NJ) was third in the shot put (39-11 1/2) and fourth in the discus (136-8); Sam Yarrington (Quaker Valley/Sewickley, PA) was third in the hammer (162-9 1/2), fourth in the shot put (39-7 1/2), and sixth in the javelin (121-3); Ed Montalvo (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bridgewater, NJ) was fourth in the 100 meters (11.35) and 200 meters (23.24); Jerome Holder (Woodbridge/Bridgeville, DE) was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (58.46) and sixth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.53) and Austin Ream (Manheim Central/Manheim, PA) was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.36) and sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (58.87).

Both teams will compete at the Penn Relays this week and also at the Millersville (Pa.) University Metrics Meet on Saturday
