ORONO, ME -- Sophomore
Stacey Lukens (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) came
off the bench to score a goal and add an assist to lead the
University of Delaware women's soccer team to a 5-1 win over
Maine Friday afternoon in Orono.
Lukens opened the scoring for
the Blue Hens (5-6-1, 3-1) by beating Maine goalkeeper Karyn
McMullin from the right corner with 12 minutes remaining in
the first half. The goal was Lukens' first of the
season.
Six minutes later Stephanie
Schmuker scored off a pass from Erika Larson to
put Delaware up 2-0 at halftime.
Tracy Cantwell
increased the lead to three with a goal assisted by Mandy
Merritt eight minutes into the second half, and Sara
Wilson scored off a corner kick from Cantwell to give
the Hens a 4-0 lead.
Carolyn Fotiu scored to put
Maine (1-12, 0-6) on the board with just under six minutes
remaining. Kelly Walker scored for Delaware with :13
left to close the scoring.
The four-goal margin of
victory was Delaware's largest since a 6-1 win over
Northeastern on Nov. 2, 1997.
Delaware continues conference
play Sunday afternoon when it visits New Hampshire at 1
p.m.
