NEWARK, DE -- Junior Mandy Merritt had a goal and three assists and Tracy Cantwell scored twice as Delaware downed Northeastern, 4-1, in women's soccer action at Delaware Mini-Stadium Sunday afternoon.

With Delaware's win, coupled with Boston University and Hartford winning on Sunday, the Blue Hens (7-7-1, 5-2 America East) clinched a slot in the America East Tournament Nov. 3 and 6. The Terriers defeated Towson, 2-0, Sunday, while Hartford handled Vermont, 8-0. Delaware will return to the post-season after a one year absence. The Hens will make the conference tournament for the fifth time in its six-year history.

Cantwell, a senior from Merrimack, NH playing in her final home game, etched her name in the school's record book when she staked the Hens to a 1-0 lead. She scored just 19 seconds into the contest, marking the fastest goal to start a game in Delaware history. She scored off of her own rebound after eluding Northeastern's diving goalkeeper Rachelle Parkinson.

Merritt, after assisting on Cantwell's goal, gave Delaware a 2-0 lead when she scored at 12:26 off of a Nicole Spadafino pass for her seventh goal of the season and the 20th of her career. She is the fourth player in school history to achieve the 20-goal and 50-point career milestones.

Spadafino made it a 3-0 lead just over four minutes later. Merritt's initial shot was knocked down by Parkinson, but trickled away towards the net, where Spadafino was waiting to knock it in for her fourth goal of the season.

Northeastern (6-11-1, 2-4-1) got on the board at 26:21 when Caitlin Springer headed Amy Devendorf's corner kick over Delaware's goalkeeper Rachel Bersin to make it a 3-1 game.

However, the Blue Hens would regain their three-goal lead 6:45 into the second half when Cantwell scored off of a rebound of a Merritt shot for her third goal of the season.

Delaware will travel to face America East leader Hartford Friday night at 7 p.m.
