Delaware vs. UMBC
Sept. 7, 1999
UMBC 3, Delaware 2 (OT)
BALTIMORE, MD -- Two
days after needing overtime to win its opener at LaSalle,
the Delaware women's soccer team died by the same sword
Tuesday, falling to UMBC, 3-2, in overtime.
Katie Zoller scored 8:44 into
the extra-session for the Retrievers (2-1) from 15 yards
out. She beat Delaware netminder Rachel Bersin to the
bottom right corner for the game-winner.
Delaware (1-1) scored first at
the 30:20 mark of the first half when senior Amy
Brino scored her first collegiate goal off of a feed
from Sara Wilson.
UMBC tied the game just before
halftime when Erin Lesh scored the first of her two goals on
the day with just 57 seconds remaining in the first
half.
Lesh scored again 15:44 into
the second half from 17 yards out to give UMBC a 2-1
lead.
However, Mandy Merritt,
Sunday's hero with a hat trick, tied the game just over
seven minutes later with an unassisted tally.
The score remained that way
until Lesh fed Zoller for the game-winner. Delaware outshot
UMBC, 12-11.
Delaware heads west this
weekend to play at the Purdue Tournament. The Blue Hens take
on Wright State Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
