Delaware vs. Virginia
Commonwealth
Oct. 3, 1999
Delaware 1, VCU 1 (2 OT)
RICHMOND, VA -- Despite
holding a 32-6 advantage in shots, University of Delaware
came away with a 1-1 tie against Virginia Commonwealth in
the second round of the Richmond Tournament on Sunday
afternoon.
Senior Nicole Spadafino
got Delaware (3-6-1) on the board 16 minutes into the second
half. The Old Bridge, NJ native put a loose ball past Lindy
Brown for her third goal of the season and 1-0 Blue Hen
lead.
VCU (1-6-2) waisted no time in
tying the game, however. Katelyn Robie scored from 15 yards
out just 6:24 later to tie the game, 1-1.
That score held up through
regulation and two 15-minute sudden-death overtime
periods.
Brown recorded 14 saves for
VCU. Rachel Bersin had three saves for Delaware, all
in the first half. Delaware's 32 shots tied the
second-highest shot total by a Blue Hen team. It was the
most since Sept. 20, 1993, when the Hens set a school-record
with 41 shots in a 9-0 blasting of Mt. St. Mary's. Delaware
has now recorded 30 or more shots six times since the
program became intercollegiate in 1990.
Delaware's Sara Wilson
and Cate Harrison were both named to the
All-Tournament team following the tournament.
Delaware hosts Drexel next
Friday at Delaware Mini-Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
