2001 University of Delaware Women's Soccer Outlook

Scott Grzenda enters his 12th season as Universiity of Delaware women's soccer coach with extreme optimism.

The Blue Hens missed on the conference tournament last season for just the second time in the history of the program. However, an 11-7-1 overall mark despite a number of key injuries made for a successful season.

Brittany Campbell

"We lost three 1-0 games last year., and two of those were in conference play," said Grzenda. "That makes a big difference in your season."

Grzenda saw just three players graduate from that team and has a vast majority of his offense return this year.

Up front, Brittany Campbell and Francesca Termini will be counted on to spark the offense. Cambell led the team with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. However, six of those goals came in a four-game span early in the season.

"We are looking for Brittany to carry the offensive loadthist year," said Grzenda, who won his 100th career game last year.

Termini sparks the Blue Hen attack. Last season, that speed led to 16 points on seven goals and two assists. She earned second-team All-America East and America East All-Rookie squad.

"Fran's speed is a huge asset to our team," said Grzenda. "As she gets better tactically, she and Brittany will make for a formidable duo."

Also fighting for a starting nod up front will be sophomore Christie Schied. The native of Sterling, VA appeared in eight games last year, recording one assist. "Christie is an extremely intelligent player and should push Termini and Campbell for playing time."

In the midfield, the tri-captains will lead the way, but will have plenty of support. Stacey Lukens, a redshirt junior from Chalfont, PA, returns after missing all of last season with a knee injury she suffered in the pre-season.

Megan McFadden, a fifth-year senior from Warminster, PA, recorded 10 points last year (3g, 4a) and will be counted on to give the offense an added dimension.

Sara Wilson, a senior from Great Falls, VA, started all 19 games a year ago. She earned All-America East Honorable Mention last year and was one of eight players to appear in all 19 games. This season, Wilson will be counted on to control the midfield.

"She is the heart of our team," said Grzenda.

Joining the captains in the midfield will be a variety of players. Sophomore transfer Caryn Blood should provide an immediate spark. She transferred to Delaware from Miami (FL) this past summer. She recorded nine points (3g, 3a) as a rookie.

"Caryn brings ability and flare to the offense right away," said Grzenda. "She will contribute immediately."

Jennifer Lobley, Lauren Gardner, Ginette Buffone, Trisha Breault and Dana Berry will also see time in the midfield. Buffone, a redshirt sophomore, started all 19 games last year.

"Ginette is one of our most gifted midfielders," said Grzenda. "We expect big things from her this season.

"In addition, Breault's quickness is a big assett and should help bolster the midfield."

Lukens, Breault, Berry and Blood will also see time on the Blue Hen frontline.

In the backfield, the Blue Hens will look to Ginna Lewing to lead the defense. Lewing, an All-America East Honorable Mention pick last year, started all 19 games. The sophomore from Yardley, PA is also an offensive threat, recording eight points last year (2g, 4a).

Joining Lewing in the backfield will be Allison Dooley, Elizabeth Garufi, Stephanie Johnson, Christine Wrightson, Christina Martinik and Shannon White.

"Dooley will make an immediate impact," said Grzenda. "She is very quick and has the ability to step up and attack."

In addition, Wrightson, Garufi and Martinik could see time in the midfield, while Lobley could slide back from the middle.

"We have a lot of versatility because of our speed," said Grzenda. "This is one of the deeper and more versatile teams that we've had here."

In goal, the Blue Hens will have a battle in the preseason for No. 1. Rachel Bersin, the opening day starter last year, is the likely starter. The junior from Bridgewater, NJ, who was 8-4-1 last year with a 0.86 GAA.

In addition, sophomore Andrea Lunn has played well in the preseason in the fight for the starting job. Freshman Lindsay Shover is expected to redshirt this season.
