The University of Delaware women's soccer team
(2-6-1, 1-0) ended a seven-game winless streak and
won its America East opener as the Hens defeated
the Maine Black Bears (1-5-2, 0-2) 1-0 on Friday at
the Delaware Mini-Stadium. Delaware, which came
into the game with a 438:36 scoreless streak,
struck in the first half when Nicole
Spadafino (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) fed a
perfect cross off a penalty kick to freshman
Stacey Lukens (Chalfont, Pa./Central Buck
West), who knotched the first goal of her career to
make the score 1-0. Delaware held Maine scoreless
for the rest of the game to extend the Black Bears'
scoreless streak to 690:18. Delaware snapped its
scoreless streak at 467:14 with the Lukens goal
with 15:22 left in the first half. Maine outshot
Delaware 16-11, 10-5 in the second half, but
Delaware goalkeeper Allison Martin (Malvern,
Pa.) had 10 saves and registered her second shutout
win of the season.
