Sophomore Mandy Merritt scored two goals
in the first half to lift the University of
Delaware women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over
UMBC in its season opener on Sunday. The Blue Hens
scored with 17:56 left in the first half when
Cate Harrison sent a pass to Merritt who
lofted a shot over the UMBC goalkeeper Mandy Robins
to make the score 1-0. The second goal of the game
came when Megan McFadden won a loose ball from a
Retriever defender and passed the ball to Merritt
who netted her second goal at with 16:01 left in
the first half to put the Blue Hens up 2-0. The
Blue Hens outshot UMBC 21-4 and had several quality
scoring opportunities in the first half as they
outshot the Retrievers 16-1. The second half was
more evenly played.
