Freshman Sarah Rowland put a shot past Delaware
goalkeeper Allison Martin with 1:03 left in
the first sudden death overtime period to lift the
Villanova women's soccer team over host Delaware
2-1 on Wednesday. The Blue Hens scored the first
goal when sophomore Mandy Merritt crossed a
pass over to junior Kelly Walker who put the
ball past goalkeeper Jeanne Hennessy. The goal
stood up for the rest of the first half and most of
the second half behind four saves by Martin and two
defensive saves by Erin Klene and Alison
Keehan on point blank shots at the goal.
Villanova managed to tie the game with 1:48
remaining in the second half as hit a corner kick
that was put in by sophomore Justina Smith. The two
teams played without scoring through the rest of
regulation and the first period of overtime until
junior Erica Rauchat freed up Rowland on a pass
that she dribbled and shot past Martin. Villanova
and Delaware both had 16 shots on the day.
