NEWARK, DE -- Freshmen
Ginette Buffone (Enfield, CT/Loomis Chaffee School)
and Ginna Lewing (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) each had a
goal and an assist as the University of Delaware women's
soccer team scored four first-half goals en route to a 4-0
win over the University of Maine Friday afternoon at
sun-splashed Delaware Field.
Delaware (10-5-1, 3-3 America
East), which scored three first-half goals in a win over
Drexel earlier in the week, jumped on the Black Bears early.
Sara Wilson headed a free kick by Lewing to
Brittany Campbell, who beat Black Bears
goalkeeper Naomi Welsh from six yards out to give the Hens
the lead just 13 minutes into the match. The goal was the
team-leading 10th of the year for Campbell.
Delaware increaed its lead
when Buffone scored off a cross from Megan McFadden
with 19 minutes remaining in the first half, and the Hens
added another goal just two minutes later when Lewing headed
home a corner kick from Buffone.
Fran Termini scored on
a breakaway in the 41st minute to complete the
scoring.
Rachel Bersin and
Erin Johnson did not have to make a save in combining
on the shutout for Delaware, while Welsh made six saves in
net for Maine (5-7, 1-5).
The win puts Delaware just one
win behind Hofstra and Northeastern in the battle for the
fourth and final playoff spot in the America East
Tournament.
Delaware will play its final
home match of the season on Sunday at Delaware Field at 1
p.m. when the Blue Hens host New Hampshire.
