BOSTON-- Kelly Smith
headed home a corner kick from Jen Herlihy 23:29 into the
match to give the Northeastern University women's soccer
team a 1-0 win over the University of Delaware Sunday
afternoon in Boston in the season finale for both
teams.
Delaware, which finished its
season 11-7-1 and 4-5 in the America East, got its best
chance with just over 18 minutes remaining in the match when
Mandy Merritt's shot from 15 yards out was stopped on
a great save by Huskies goalkeeper Sarah Reidel. Both teams
registered 14 shots in the match.
Rachel Bersin made four
saves for Delaware, which failed to qualify for the America
East Tournament for the second time in three years.
Ginette Buffone led the Blue Hen attack with four
shots, as Delaware held a 7-3 advantage on corner
kicks.
Reidel made five saves for
Northeastern (11-6-1, 5-4), which also did not make the
conference tournament.
