NEWARK, DE -- Freshmen
Ginette Buffone (Enfield, CT/Loomis Chaffee) and
Ginna Lewing (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) started their
collegiate careers off with a bang as the Delaware women's
soccer team defeated UMBC, 3-0, in its season opener at
rain-soaked Delaware Field.
Lewing headed in a corner kick
from Buffone just 10 minutes into the game to give the Blue
Hens the early lead. Eight minutes later another freshman,
Elizabeth Garufi, scored off a feed from Brittany
Campbell to make it 2-0.
With just over two minutes
remaining in the half Megan McFadden scored off of a
beautiful one-touch pass from Campbell to give Delaware a
3-0 halftime edge.
Rachel Bersin
(Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) and the Blue Hen
defense made the lead stand up. Delaware only allowed nine
shots, and Bersin made five saves to collect her fourth
career shutout. Delaware has shutout UMBC in all five
meetings in Newark.
The Blue Hens, who have won
four straight season openers under coach Scott Grzenda, will
host Kent State Friday at 4 p.m at Delaware
Field.
