Terriers Outshoot Hens 31-4; Score with 13 minutes left in 2nd OT

Andrea Lunn stopped 11 shots in goal for Delaware

BOSTON --Sophomore forward Katie Smurthwaite scored the game's only goal with 13:47 left in the second overtime as top seed Boston University edged the University of Delaware 1-0 in an America East semifinal game Friday night.

The Terriers, the America East defending champion, won their fifth straight game to improve 13-5-1 on the season and advance to the league championship game Sunday afternoon vs. No. 2 seed Hartford. Hartford (15-4)advanced with a 1-0 triple overtime win over Hofstra in Friday's first game.

No. 4 seed Delaware, which advanced to the league semifinals for the second time in the last three seasons, finished the season with a record of 11-8-1, losing for just the second time in its last eight games.

The game marked the University of Delaware's final game as members of the America East conference after 10 seasons. Delaware will compete as members of the Colonial Athletic Association in every sport except football and women's rowing beginning with this winter season.

The Terriers outshot the Blue Hens by a 31-4 margin and had two goals called back in the first half, one on a offsides and the other that barely stayed out of the goal after hitting each goalpost.

After 106 scoreless minutes, the Terriers finally clinched the win as Smurthwaite scored on a header off passes from Teresa Petrucelli and Suzanne Hudak.

Delaware goalkeeper Andrea Lunn was sharp in goal, posting 11 saves on the day.
