Blood's goal stops
Old Dominion in second OT NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Caryn Blood (Red Bank, NJ/Miami University) scored with 7:56 remaining in the second overtime as the University of Delaware defeated Old Dominion University, 3-2, in women's soccer at the Mini-Stadium Wednesday afternoon. Megan McFadden notched her second assist of the game on Blood's score as the Hens evened their record at 5-5. A defensive battle turned offensive less then five minutes into the second half when ODU's Melanie McGovern scored off Jen Henley's crossing pass. McGovern added her second goal of the game fifteen minutes later to give the Lady Monarchs took a 2-1 lead. The Old Dominion (3-6-1) lead lasted less then three minutes, though, as Delaware's Stacey Lukens netted a McFadden free kick to tie the score. The teams then combined for 15 shots before Blood ended the game in the second extra period. ODU goaltender Tonya Dedmond stopped six shots in the losing effort, while Delaware's Rachel Bersin stopped nine shots for her third win of the season. America East assist leader Ginette Buffone recorded her 10th assist of the season on Ginna Lewing's first half goal. The Hens open up a big conference weekend Friday night at the Mini-Stadium when both the men's and women's soccer teams face Albany University. The women open up the doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
