Blue Hens Score Two Early on Way To Season-Opening Win

Fran Termini had a hand in two goals in the first four minutes of the game

BALTIMORE, MD -- Sophomore Fran Termini scored a goal and assisted on another in the first four minutes of the game as the University of Delaware women's soccer team struck early on its way to a season-opening 5-2 win over host UMBC Saturday afternoon at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

The Blue Hens (1-0) won their season opener for the fifth straight season, downing the Retrievers in three of them. Delaware will open its home season Tuesday when it hosts St. Joseph's.

Delaware got scoring from four different players, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before UMBC got on the board with 21:32 left to play. The Hens' five goals was their highest output since a 5-1 win over Temple last Sept. 12.

Termini (Oceanside/Oceanside, NY), who scored seven goals as a freshman last season, assisted Gina Lewing (Pennsbury/Yardley, PA) on the game's first goal just two minutes and four seconds into the contest and then scored an unassisted goal herself just 77 seconds later to give the Hens a 2-0 lead.

Delaware built the lead to 3-0 13 minutes into the second half when junior Brittany Campbell (Notre Dame/Newtown, PA) scored unassisted. Campbell led the team in scoring with 10 goals in 2000.

UMBC battled back, getting goals from Missy Moore and Nicole Grinspoon in a seven-minute span to cut the lead to 3-2 with 14:51 left to play.

But Delaware got some insurance as freshman Christine Wrightson (Hempfield/Landisville, PA) scored her first career goal just two minutes later and UMBC kicked the ball into its own net four minutes after that to put the game away.

Delaware outshot the Retrievers 18-10 with Blue Hen goalkeeper Andrea Lunn (Masconomet/Topsfield, MA) posting six saves.
