BURLINGTON, VT --
Vermont senior Kelly Herrero scored her second goal of the
game with 3:25 left in overtime as the Catamounts downed the
University of Delaware 2-1 in an America East women's soccer
game Sunday afternoon at Centennial Field.
Delaware, which lost its third
straight game, including its second conference game in three
days, fell to 2-3 overall, 0-2 America East. Vermont snapped
a four-game losing streak to improve to 2-4, 1-1 America
East.
After a scoreless first half,
Herrero scored her first goal just 96 seconds into the
second half off a feed from Sara Jablonski.
But the Blue Hens bounced
right back, tying the game at 1-1 just under three minutes
later when senior Sara Wilson (Herndon/Great Valls,
VA) scored her second goal of the season off a feed from
sophomore Ginette Buffone.
Neither team scored again,
sending the game into the 10-minute overtime period. Herrero
won the game just six minutes into the extra stanza, taking
a feed from Megan Galbreath.
Delaware lost despite
outshooting the Catamounts 21-11 and holding a 7-2 advantage
in corner kicks. Delaware goalkeeper Andrea Lunn
suffered the loss while posting two saves.
The Blue Hens will return to
action Sept. 26 at Lehigh.
