George Mason
converts Penalty Kick in Second Overtime, Hens fall
2-1
FAIRFAX, VA -- Katy
McGee converted a penalty kick with 34 seconds left in the
second overtime to give George Mason a 2-1 victory over
Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer
match Sunday afternoon.
Katy Robertson was tripped in
the left side of the penalty area by a Blue Hen defender to
set up the game-winning goal. McGee put the penalty kick
into the lower-right corner of the goal at
109:26.
The Patriots got on the board
first when Robertson knocked home a rebound just under the
cross bar from 20-yards out, past Delaware goalkeeper
Lindsay Shover. Caroline Kent took the initial shot,
which was stopped by Shover, but the loose ball found the
foot of Robertson and she put George Mason ahead, 1-0 at
20:50.
The Blue Hens responded with
the game's tying goal when Caryn Blood lofted her
shot into the upper-left corner from 15-yards out at 59:22.
Christina Martinik picked up an assist on Blood's
team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Shover had eight saves in a
losing effort for the Blue Hens. Sarah Coughlin played the
second half and the two overtime periods had three saves for
the Patriots. Naomi Hines added three saves in the first
half.
George Mason (5-8, 3-2 CAA)
held a 17-15 advantage in shots, including an 8-0 edge in
the overtime periods. The Hens owned a 9-1 advantage in
corner kicks.
Delaware (6-5-1, 2-2-1 CAA)
returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Penn at 7
p.m.
