Delaware falls 1-0
to Hofstra in the First-Round of the CAA
Championships
HEMPSTEAD, NY
- Andrea Sherman scored 9:25 into the first overtime to lead
No. 3 Hofstra to a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Delaware in the
first-round of the Colonial Athletic Association women's
soccer championships Tuesday afternoon in Hempstead,
NY.
Delaware
finishes their season 9-9-1, while Hofstra improves to
14-4-1. The Pride will take on No. 2 George Mason in the
semi-finals of the CAA Championships on Friday, November 8
at 5 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia
Beach, VA.
The Pride
stormed down the field with a 3-on-2 advantage, when Amber
Albrecht made a pass to her right that found the foot of
Sherman and she went in alone and beat Delaware goalkeeper
Lindsay Shover for the game-winner.
The Blue Hens,
who have reached the post-season in seven of the last 10
years, made their first playoff appearance as a member of
the CAA.
Shover matched
her career-high with nine saves in a losing effort for the
Blue Hens.
Rebecca
Wachsberger had four saves in net for Hofstra
(14-4-1).
Delaware has
now finished with a record of .500 or better in three
straight seasons and nine of the 13 years under head coach
Scott Grzenda. The Hens finished 11-8-1 and 11-7-1 in 2001
and 2000 respectively.
Junior
Caryn Blood led the team in scoring this season with
20 points on seven goals and six assists. Shover finishes
the season with a 0.84 goals-against-average, the
second-lowest in the programs 13-year history. Also,
Shover's .857 save percentage was the second-highest
single-season total in Delaware history.
