Delaware falls 1-0 to Hofstra in the First-Round of the CAA Championships

HEMPSTEAD, NY - Andrea Sherman scored 9:25 into the first overtime to lead No. 3 Hofstra to a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Delaware in the first-round of the Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer championships Tuesday afternoon in Hempstead, NY.

Delaware finishes their season 9-9-1, while Hofstra improves to 14-4-1. The Pride will take on No. 2 George Mason in the semi-finals of the CAA Championships on Friday, November 8 at 5 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, VA.

The Pride stormed down the field with a 3-on-2 advantage, when Amber Albrecht made a pass to her right that found the foot of Sherman and she went in alone and beat Delaware goalkeeper Lindsay Shover for the game-winner.

The Blue Hens, who have reached the post-season in seven of the last 10 years, made their first playoff appearance as a member of the CAA.

Shover matched her career-high with nine saves in a losing effort for the Blue Hens.

Rebecca Wachsberger had four saves in net for Hofstra (14-4-1).

Delaware has now finished with a record of .500 or better in three straight seasons and nine of the 13 years under head coach Scott Grzenda. The Hens finished 11-8-1 and 11-7-1 in 2001 and 2000 respectively.

Junior Caryn Blood led the team in scoring this season with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. Shover finishes the season with a 0.84 goals-against-average, the second-lowest in the programs 13-year history. Also, Shover's .857 save percentage was the second-highest single-season total in Delaware history.
