NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss in a battle with the United States Military Academy (Army) in the Hens’ home opener on Saturday, August 28. Leigh Victory (pictured) and the Hens allowed just three shots on goal the entire game.

The two teams fought through a scoreless first half, with either side taking just two shots. Delaware’s defense played tough in the first period, not allowing shot on goal until the 34th minute. Junior goaltender Breanna Stemler was up to the task, recording her only save of the half.

But the Black Knights (2-1) took the advantage just over one minute into the fresh half when Molly McGuigan hit a floating shot from a set piece near the midfield. The Blue Hens (1-1) had several chances late in the game when sophomore Ali Miller sent in a corner that was headed by several Delaware players, but ultimately going wide of the cage.

Stemler finished the game with two saves, only seeing three shots on goal the whole match. Senior defender Morgan Warrington was the lone Hen to register multiple shots, tallying two, putting both on cage.

Delaware is on the road for two weeks and idle until Friday, Sept. 3 when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y. for a match with Cornell University. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Charles F. Berman Field.
