Goal in Overtime Lifts Blue Hens Over
Saint Joseph's in Season

NEWARK,
DE-- Just 31 seconds into the second
overtime, junior Shelby Lawrence
(Columbus, OH/St. Francis DeSales-at
right) found the back of the net from 20
yards out off a pass from Shannon Alger
(Hopatcong, NJ/ Morris Catholic) to lead
the University of Delaware women's soccer
team to a season opening win over Saint
Joseph's University on Friday night at
Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The first
and second periods were evenly matched as
both teams fought for control and had
their chances. Delaware (1-0) outshot
Saint Joseph's (0-1) 7-2 in the first half
while the Hawks held the advantage in the
second half, 5-3.
Saint
Joseph's had a chance to win the game in
the first overtime as sophomore Megan
Schutt broke loose of the defender and put
a direct shot on goalie Lindsay Shover
(Lancaster, PA/ Penn Manor). Shover posted
the save and the game remained scoreless.
The Blue
Hens were determined not to let their home
opener get away though as Lawrence and
Alger connected to start the second
overtime and that decided the contest. The
ball sailed just over the head of goalie
Jenn Kuhn as Delaware secured a
victory.
For the
game, Shover made three saves to Kuhn's
four. Delaware out shot the Hawks 13-9
Delaware returns home on Sunday when they
host Seton Hall at 1:00 p.m.
