Defeats Towson, 2-0
NEWARK, DE
(October 22, 2004)-- The University of
Delaware women's soccer team scored two
early goals and held on to defeat Towson,
2-0, on Friday night in Colonial Athletic
Association action at Delaware
Mini-Stadium.
The Blue
Hens picked up a crucial three points as
they are now tied for first place in the
CAA with Old Dominion. Delaware and the
Monarchs each have 13 points while
Virginia Commonwealth and Hofstra each
have 12 in the race for the top spot in
the league.
The Blue
Hens (9-4-3, 4-2-1 CAA) won their third
straight game on Senior Night, as the team
honored seniors Christina Martinik
(Monroe, CT/ Masuk) and Christine
Wrightson (Landisville, PA/ Hempfield)
before the match. Towson (6-9-1, 2-4-1
CAA) dropped its fourth straight
contest.
The Blue
Hens opened the scoring when current CAA
and ECAC Player of the Week, Shannon Alger
(Hopatcong, NJ/ Morris Catholic -at right)
scored her fourth goal of the year 26:54
into the match. Alger's goal came off a
Melissa Kunisky (Grantville, PA/ Lower
Dauphin) corner kick that was directed to
Alger by Alli D'Amico (Manasquan, NJ/ Red
Bank Catholic).
Delaware
struck again just over three minutes later
as Allison Kendro (St. David's, PA/
Episcopal) redirected a pass that Lindsay
Novotny (Towson, MD/ St. Rose) knocked
home for her first career goal at the
29:55 mark.
The second
half was fairly evenly played as both
teams had scoring chances, but neither was
able to connect.
Bonnie
Mills (Bear, DE/ Caravel Academy) was
solid in goal for the Blue Hens, making
one save to post her second shutout of the
year, while Brandi Daniels made five saves
in goal for the Tigers. The Blue Hens
out-shot Towson, 14-5, while the Tigers
held an 11-5 advantage in corner
kicks.
'Delaware
returns to action on Thursday, October 28,
when the Blue Hens travel to James Madison
for a CAA contest at 6 p.m.
