 Beekman
Propels Delaware to 3-0 Women's Soccer Win
over UMBC
NEWARK, DE
(September 17,2004)- The University of
Delaware women's soccer team defeated
University of Maryland Baltimore County by
a 3-0 score on Friday night at Delaware
Mini-Stadium. The win is the Blue Hens'
(4-1-2) third straight and their second
straight shutout.
Junior
Allison Kendro (St. David's, PA/
Episcopal) got things started in this one
as she took a cross from freshman Lindsay
Boyd (Abington, PA/ Abington) and knocked
it home. Kendro's goal was her first of
the season and came 26 minutes into the
game.
Less than
ten minutes later, the Blue Hens struck
again, this time it was freshman Katie
Beekman (Neptune, NJ/ St. Rose at right)
taking a cross from senior Christina
Martinik (Monroe, CT/ Masuk) and banging
it home from the left post. The goal was
the first of Beekman's collegiate career.
Delaware outshot UMBC, 12-2 in the first
half.
Delaware
finished out its scoring on the night with
six minutes to go, as Beekman struck for
her second goal of the game. Retrievers'
goalie Robin Babaris made the save on
Martinik only to have the ball deflect out
and onto Beekman's foot.
Junior
Lindsey Shover (Lancaster, PA/ Penn Manor)
was solid in goal as she was forced to
make just one save on three Retriever
shots. Babaris made five saves in her 90
minutes of action for UMBC. Delaware
outshot the visitors 20-3.
The Blue
Hens will return to action on Sunday,
September 19. Delaware will travel to
Temple to take on the Owls at 1:00
p.m.
