 Boyd
and Krepps Lift Delaware to 2-1 Win over
UNC Wilmington
NEWARK, DE
(October 17, 2004)-- University of
Delaware freshman forward Lindsay Boyd
(Abington, PA/ Abington) scored with just
three minutes to go to break a tie game
and the Blue Hen (8-4-3, 3-2-1 CAA)
women's soccer team held on to defeat UNC
Wilmington, 2-1, in Colonial Athletic
Association action on Sunday
afternoon.
The first
half of the game was played primarily at
midfield, as both teams had their chances
but were unable to capitalize. The shots
were even at 4-4 for the first 45 minutes
of play.
UNC
Wilmington (10-3-1, 1-3-1 CAA) struck
first when Brooke Boley took a cross from
Justine Hammer 10 yards out and deposited
the ball in the back of the net with 26:31
remaining in the match.
Less than
a minute later, the Blue Hens were awarded
a penalty kick and junior Jennifer Krepps
(Lansdale, PA/ North Penn-at right) beat
Seahawks' goalie Rachael Wilson to tie the
game at 1-1. The two teams then battled
back and forth, as both teams missed
several opportunities to take the
lead.
Boyd's
goal came with 2:36 remaining, as she took
a pass from junior Shannon Alger
(Hopatcong, NJ/ Morris Catholic) and
knocked home the game winner.
Sophomore
Bonnie Mills (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy)
played a solid game in goal for the Blue
Hens, making four saves and surrendering
the lone goal, while Wilson was forced to
make six saves for the Seahawks. The Blue
Hens heldc a 13-7 shot advantage for the
match and held a 7-2 edge in corner
kicks.
Delaware
returns to action Friday, October 22, when
the Blue Hens host Towson in another CAA
match at 7 p.m.
