Leads Delaware Over Virginia Commonwealth

(October 15, 2004) -- Delaware junior
midfielder Shannon Alger (Hopatcong,
NJ/Morris Catholic - at right) scored her
second goal of the match with 17:36
remaining to lead the Blue Hen women's
soccer team to a 2-1 win over Virginia
Commonwealth in the driving rain Friday
afternoon at Delaware Mini-Stadium
Delaware
improved to 7-4-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the
Colonial Athletic Association with the
victory while the Rams fell to 10-4
overall and 3-1 in league play.
Alger
opened the scoring 17:39 into the match by
taking a feed from junior midfielder
Shelby Lawrence (Columbus, OH/St. Francis
DeSales) and scoring her second goal of
the season. Virginia Commonwealth evened
the match just 6:16 before halftime when
Sandra Anger scored off a pass from
Solfrid Andersen.
However
Alger scored the game-winning goal in the
73rd minute when she dribbled toward the
goal and beat Rams goalkeeper Lauren
Hardison.
Delaware
sophomore goalkeeper Bonnie Mills (Bear,
DE/Caravel Academy) made six saves for the
Blue Hens, while Hardison stopped two
shots for Virginia
Commonwealth.
The Rams
held an 11-9 shot advantage, while
Delaware had a 7-3 edge in corner
kicks.
Delaware
returns to action on Sunday when the Blue
Hens host UNC Wilmington in another CAA
match at 1 p.m.
