NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team is off to its best start in program history after defeating Lehigh University 2-1 in the last game of the Delaware Adidas Blue Hen Classic on Sunday afternoon at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The Hens (5-0-1) are unbeaten after six games for the first time. The 1994 team started 5-0 before losing to #9 Hartford 6-2 in its sixth game. In Sunday’s game, Alli D’Amico (right) scored the game-winner for the Hens with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Delaware carried the play through most of the first half, but was unable to score on Lehigh goalkeeper Julie Kafka. Just over 12 minutes into the second half the Hens took the lead when Emily Sammis headed home her first goal of the season off of a corner kick by Kasie Shover.

Lehigh (3-3) tied the game in the 70th minute on a bizarre play. Natalie Hojnacki centered a pass that Daniela Molina directed towards the goal, but was turned aside by Blue Hen goalkeeper Bonnie Mills. Molina sent another offering towards the goal, and while the ball never hit the netting, it was ruled to have crossed the line and tied the game.

Less than five minutes later, D’Amico scored the winning goal for the Hens, off another corner kick by Shover. The initial kick bounced off of two Mountain Hawk defenders before being controlled by D’Amico, who beat Kafka with the deciding goal.

Kafka played well for the Mountain Hawks, making eight saves to keep Lehigh in the game. Mills made three saves for the Hens and has allowed only three goals through the first six games.

In the day’s first game, Yale defeated Montana 1-0 on a goal by Emma Whitfield 40:32 into the first half.

The Hens will return to action on Friday at 5 p.m. when they take on Fairfield in the first round of the Army Tournament.
