NEWARK, DE -- Alli D’Amico scored only 1:06 into the game and Emily Sammis and Lindsay Boyd each added first half goals in leading the University of Delaware women’s soccer team to a 3-1 win over Old Dominion University on Friday evening in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. The loss was the first of the season for Old Dominion, which had been 8-0.
D’Amico (right) scored the first goal for the Hens (6-1-2, 1-0 CAA) when she controlled a loose ball inside the box following a free kick. D’Amico emphatically put the ball in the back of the net from less than 10 yards out.
Less than 20 minutes later, Sammis scored her second goal of the season when she headed home a feed in the air from Melissa Kilker from the right baseline. The goal gave Kilker her second assist on the night.
Delaware dominated throughout the first half, keeping the Monarchs pinned in their own end for much of the period. Lindsay Boyd’s team-leading sixth goal came with less than three minutes remaining in the first half to put the Hens up 3-0 at the break.
Old Dominion (8-1) put the pressure on the Hens in the second half, but were only able to score when a Delaware defender inadvertantly put a ball into the Hens net..
Bonnie Mills made seven saves for Delaware, while Lauren Tupman and Colby Owen each made two saves for the Monarchs. Tupman was injured on Boyd’s goal and did not return.
The Hens will return to action on Sunday against at home against William & Mary in a rematch of last season’s CAA quarterfinal match.
