NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Caitlyn Germain (at right) scored the game’s only goal just over 28 minutes into the contest to lead the University of Delaware to a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph’s in its women’s soccer season opener Friday night at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
Germain, a forward from Auburn, MA (St. Peter-Marian) who earned a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie team in 2005 when she led the team with five goals, tallied the only goal of the night as she scored from the top of the box past Saint Joseph’s goalkeeper Jen Kuhn (four saves) at the 28:05 mark. Germain recorded a game-high five shots for the game.
Delaware (1-0), which advanced to the CAA semifinals a year ago with a 10-6-4 record, defeated the Hawks (0-1) for the seventh straight time, including the last four by shutout with all four coming in the season opener.
The Blue Hens outshot the Hawks by a wide 14-5 margin with UD senior goalkeeper Bonnie Mills (Caravel/Bear, DE) registering four saves to post her sixth career shutout. Saint Joseph’s threatened much of the final 10 minutes but couldn’t put the ball past Mills.
Megan Schutt led the Hawks with three shots while Nancy Cook added two. Delaware’s North Carolina State transfer Kasie Shover had three shots on goal in her Blue Hen debut.
Delaware will continue action Sunday when the Hens host Seton Hall at 1 p.m. at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
