NEWARK, DE -- Behind second-half goals from sophomore forward Melissa Kilker (right) and senior midfielder Emily Sammis, the University of Delaware women’s soccer team defeated Marshall 2-0 on Friday night at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

After a slow, defensive first half in which neither team could find many good scoring chances, sophomore forward Caitlyn Germain found Kilker with a beautiful cross into the box. Kilker settled the ball and lofted a high-arching shot just past the fingertips of Marshall goalie Liz Orton. The goal was the first of the season for Kilker, who scored three times as a freshman last year.

Less than five minutes later, Blue Hen junior midfielder Dana Rodgers blasted a shot that hit the left post and ricocheted toward Sammis, who found the back of the net on the rebound to extend the Blue Hen lead.

Delaware poured on the pressure from there, but failed to convert numerous scoring chances later in the half. The Hens, who improved to 2-1 on the season, dominated possession throughout and out-shot the Thundering Herd 18-5. Thirteen of those shots came after intermission.

Delaware is now 2-0 all-time against Marshall, which lost its second straight and fell to 1-2.

In goal for UD, sophomore Annie Bevan made two saves to notch the first win of her career.

Delaware returns to the field Sunday, when it visits Seton Hall at 1 p.m.
