BROOKLINE, MA -- Liza Rebello scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Northeastern University women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Delaware Friday night.
The Huskies, who improved to 4-9-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, struck first just 18 seconds into the match when Sofia Palmquist took a feed from Rebello and beat Blue Hen goalkeeper E.J. Goldman. Northeastern added a goal at the 23:22 mark when Emilee Ellison scored an unassisted goal and the Huskies took the two-goal lead into halftime.
Delaware, which fell to 7-9 overall and 3-6 in the league, got on the board only 52 seconds into the second half when Caitlyn Germain (at right) collected a rebound off an Emily Sammis shot and pushed the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The goal was the seventh of the season for Germain, tying her for the team lead with Amy Pickard, while Sammis recorded her team-high fourth assist of the year.
However Rebello extended Northeastern’s lead back to two when she scored off a breakaway with 30:05 remaining, and exactly four minutes later she closed the scoring with a shot from 10 yards out into the top right corner of the goal.
Goldman made six saves in the Delaware net, while Annie Petrofsky stopped 14 shots for the Huskies. Delaware held a 23-14 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Blue Hens return home Sunday to host Hofstra at 1 p.m. at the Delaware Mini-Stadium
