SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- Senior midfielder Emily Sammis (right) scored the game-winning goal with just over seven minutes left in regulation to give the University of Delaware women's soccer team a 1-0 win at previously unbeaten Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Hens outshot Seton Hall 9-4 in the first half of a rugged match that featured 26 fouls and two cards. The action slowed after intermission, as the teams battled in the midfield without many good looks at the goal. In the 75th minute, Pirate defender Megan Mills received a red card, giving Delaware a one-man advantage. UD made Seton Hall pay eight minutes later, when Sammis finally put the Hens in front.

The co-captain settled a cross from freshman forward Amy Pickard and buried the ball in the bottom left corner of the net at the 82:46 mark, giving Delaware (3-1) its third straight win.

The goal was Sammis's third of the season and the seventh of her career. She is the first Blue Hen to score in three consecutive games since Lindsay Boyd found the net in four straight early last year.

The Hens improved to 2-0-2 all-time against the Pirates, who lost their first match of the year.

The Hens held an 11-10 edge in shots, as junior midfielder Kasie Shover led the Hen attack with four.

Sophomore goalkeeper Annie Bevan made five saves for the Hens, recording her second shutout in as many games.

Delaware returns to the field on Sept. 16, when the Blue Hens visit Georgetown at 1 p.m.
