CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- The University of Delaware women's soccer team opened its season with a 4-0 loss to No. 17 Virginia on Friday evening at Klockner Stadium. Goalkeeper E.J. Goldman made seven saves for the Blue Hens.
In an early test against the Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse, the young Blue Hens fought hard but had no answer for the Cavaliers’ explosive attack. Jess Rostedt, Sinead Farrelly, Kelly Quinn, and Sarah Curtis scored goals for Virginia, which outshot the Hens 29-2 and earned 18 corner kicks to Delaware’s zero.
In her first career start, junior goalkeeper E.J. Goldman (at right) made seven saves - all in the first half - for the Hens. Sophomore forward Caitlyn Germain and senior midfielder Emily Sammis recorded the team’s only shots.
The Hens, 12-5 all-time in season openers, lost their first since 2002. They are now 0-6 all-time against ACC competition.
Rostedt, a third-team NSCAA All-American last season, opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when she blasted a shot past Goldman from 20 yards out. Delaware kept the Cavaliers off the board for the rest of the half, but Farrelly found the net on a header in the 56th minute to give her team a comfortable lead. Quinn added a goal on a Rostedt assist ten minutes later, and Curtis snuck a shot inside the far post to secure the win.
Every Virginia starter took at least one shot.
The Hens return to action Sunday, when they host Saint Joseph’s at 1 p.m. at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
