NEWARK, Del.– The University of Delaware women’s soccer team (1-0) defeated Lafayette 1-0 Friday night in the Blue Hens’ season opener at the Delaware Mini Stadium.
Senior Alli D’Amico (at right), in her first game back after sitting out most of the 2006 season, headed in a cross from freshman Laura Klebe 11 minutes into the second half to seal the victory for the Blue Hens.
In other Blue Hen Classic action Friday, the first game of the night saw St. John’s (2-0) beat Towson 1-0 on a goal by Jen Leaverton with 12 minutes left in regulation. Lafayette (0-1-1) will face Towson (1-2) on Sunday at noon followed by Delaware vs. St. John’s at 2:30 p.m in the final day of action.
The Blue Hens were on the attack most of the game as they outshot the Leopards 16-6 and had 13 corners to Lafayette’s three. Pre-season All-Colonial Athletic Association team selection Caitlyn Germain led the team with five shots.
Lafayette looked like it would strike early when only a couple minutes in, midfielder Lauren Hinkel took a shot from inside the box that hit the crossbar.
Also, early in the second half, Bevan came out of the net and the ball got past her before Klebe was able to keep it from rolling in. Lafayette’s Julia Bell then took another shot from inside the box, but Bevan sprinted back to the net and made a diving save.
