NEWARK, DE -- Four high school standouts, including two each from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, have signed NCAA National Letters of Intent to attend the University of Delaware on athletic scholarships and compete for the Blue Hen women’s soccer team this fall, head coach Scott Grzenda announced Monday.
The group includes forward Stacie Dulkis from Mahwah, NJ (Mahwah High School), defender Laura Klebe of Wayne, PA (Conestoga HS), goalkeeper Breanna Stemler from Horsham, PA (Hatboro-Horsham HS), and midfielder Leigh Victory from New Milford, NJ (New Milford HS).
Dulkis was a three-time first team all-league and two-time first team all-county selection at Mahwah High School. As a senior, she was named one of the top 20 players in the state of New Jersey. She is also a member of the Arsenal World Class Club team that was ranked No. 1 in the state and the region and No. 3 in the nation during the 2007 season. She also is a four-year letterwinner in track and field and is the school’s record-holder in the 55 meters.
“Stacie is a very technical, athletic, hard working player,” said Grzenda, who will enter his 18th season at the helm of the Blue Hens this fall. “She has the ability to score goals in bunches and the tenacity to create opportunities from nothing. We expect Stacie to contribute immediately to our offense.”
Klebe, an outside defender, was a three-time first team Al-Central League selection at Conestoga High School where she was named the team’s defensive Most Valuable Player twice and the team MVP as a senior. She led Conestoga to the state tournament three of her four seasons and helped the Pioneers win the 2007 state AAA title. She is currently a defender for the FC Delco Fury Club team that has won three consecutive Eastern Pennsylvania State championships and was a Region One finalists in 2007. She also was a 3 vs. 3 national champion in 2001.
“Laura is a great one-on-one defender who has the ability to both shut down opponents and get involved in the attack,” said Grzenda. “She has great speed and a great soccer mind. We are very happy she chose Delaware to continue her athletic and academic careers.”
Stemler was a standout goalkeeper and an honor roll student at Hatboro-Horsham High School where she was a three-time first team All-Suburban One selection and earned her team’s Most Valuable Player award three times. She was a six-year member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Olympic Development team, has played on the ODP Regional team, and has trained with the National team. She currently plays for the Spirit United Wildcats Club team.
“Breanna is a great goalkeeper,” said Grzenda. “She has played at an extremely high level and been very successful. She is someone who is always consistent and can make the big save when needed.”
Victory, a versatile midfielder at New Milford High School, capped an outstanding career this past fall. She scored 72 goals in her career and set the school assist record with 70 as she was named first team all-league four times and all-county twice. As a member of the Arsenal World Class Club squad, she teamed with Dulkis to help the team achieve a No. 3 national ranking. Arsenal was also ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 1 in Region One over the past year. Victory was a member of the New Jersey State Team during her high school career and is a four-year honor roll student.
“Leigh is a terrific athlete and will be one of the toughest players in our conference,” Grzenda said. “She has the ability to excel anywhere on the field. She will be a great addition to our team.”
Delaware finished the 2007 season with a record of 8-10 and finished eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association with a mark of 4-7.
